Nickels and Dimes — To Tear Down or Build Up

Recently, a friend of mine mentioned that she recently enjoyed her first Corona. It tasted good, she said, and she could see herself switching from her usual glass of white wine to one during these dog days of summer,

“Really, Corona?” I replied. “Don’t drink that nonsense. I mean, I don’t touch anything without IPA at the end of its name.” She shot me a disinterested glance.

A second later, another friend who had heard her comment offered his suggestion: “Corona! That’s great. Now, give Pacifico or Modelo a try. If you like Corona, you might enjoy those a little more. At worst, they’re all pretty similar so probably worth a try.”

The contrasting comments intrigued me. Mine focused the discussion on my tastes, as if my interest trumped hers. My friend, though, chose a different approach. His words accepted her opinion. They valued our friend’s new interest and he leveraged his experiences to offer an alternative she might enjoy.

His point encouraged, offering a path towards a possibly more enjoyable experience.

My critique judged. It tore down without regard for who it criticized.

My friend was helpful. I was not.

This experience reminded me that with every response we give we face a decision: Strike with negativity or build with positivity.

The choice is ours to make.
